Phil

Director

Phil’s role in the business is to create effective ways of working, identify and define processes, drive operational improvements, lead on website development, and keep an eye on advances in technology.

Phil’s career(s) span 30 years in the field of information management.

During an initial career in UK Armed Forces, Phil trained and managed teams that commissioned and maintained communications and information systems.  Subsequently as a consultant to HM Government, Phil managed highly classified information systems to deliver business and operational benefit – this included the switch from analogue to digital video surveillance and the associated change in working practices.

Since migrating to New Zealand, Phil has worked in both the private and public sector, managing change and developing business improvement.  Whilst with Tait Communications, Phil led the development of new products and services.  At Objective Corp, Phil led on business improvement initiatives and worked with Western Australia Police on managing information in major crime investigations.

Phil also led information management initiatives at Western Bay of Plenty District Council, Housing NZ Corporation and Ministry of Social Development.

More recently, Phil has worked with Ministry for Business Innovation and Enterprise, identifying areas for improvement and working with teams to consolidate their business process and information requirements.  A key product of this work was a web-based platform for all processes, templates and supporting information using the MBIE intranet.  The “Programme Support Environment” grew to over 100 pages and reduced on-boarding time, improved reporting and ensured consistency across the business.

Avalon clients benefit from this previous work and recent projects include:

  • online shopping,
  • online training and Learning Management System,
  • smart forms,
  • workflow-based support tools.

Building upon a background of Engineering (Electronics and Communications), Phil was registered as a Chartered Engineer in 2008 and became a Certified Management Consultant in 2015.

Phil’s passion is for improving business effectiveness and, in his spare time, enjoys exploring the Wairarapa on foot, bicycle and motorbike.  Phil is a Trustee of the Greytown Trails Trust, on the Board Retired Working Dogs NZ and his voluntary work includes support to:
